Project Overview

“You have to have work and earn a living, so you have to go where the job’s at" - Scott County, Mississippi, Civil Rights Veteran (Stuesse and Helton, 2013)

Migrations in the South take three forms (into, out of, and within). The South extends from all the states southeast of the line made by Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland. Each individual subpage provides context and illustrates the reactions from government level and public regarding the intersection of race and place. Labor history is crucial to understand migration patterns given the history of forced migration (i.e. slavery) as well as a history of abuse and exploitation of workers depending on race, class, and gender.
