Research on important cultural symbols across the world and for people of many different backgrounds was done for "Una Pintura de Emory". Some of this research was an ethnographic collection of Emory student stories on symbols they associate with a sense of belonging or identity. Many of the illustrations in "Una Pintura de Emory" have personalized student input behind them. Monarch butterflies: Monarchs are beautiful and spectacular animals who migrate yearly to and from Mexico. To many, they represent heritage, transformation, and perseverance, and monarchs shine a light on the beauty of migration. 

"The life cycle of the monarch butterfly, from egg to caterpillar to its final majestic form, mirrors the cycles of life, offering a powerful representation of change, rebirth, and evolution. Witnessing a monarch butterfly, to me, signifies the promise of forthcoming positive transformations or a new direction in life. Their delicate yet resilient existence serves as a reminder that change is not only inevitable but can lead to newfound strength and beauty.

This symbolism is deeply intertwined with my family's narrative. My parents, immigrants from Mexico to the United States, embarked on their own transformative journey in pursuit of a better life. The monarch butterflies, migrating from Mexico, serve as a link to my cultural roots, encapsulating the essence of my family's struggle and perseverance. Their relentless pursuit of a brighter future for my brother and me is a testament to their sacrifices.

Every monarch I see always brings me comfort and positivity. It serves as a tribute to my parents' enduring strength and determination. Their sacrifices form the foundation of my identity and the driving force behind my ambitions. The monarch butterfly, with its inherent ties to Mexico and its symbolism of change, encapsulates the grit and resilience inherent in Mexican culture as well.
